Give a Relaxing Foot Massage to a Friend

Take some time away from the television and away from the computer and focus on a friend or a partner.  I am continuing from my last blog and suggesting that you share more massage with one another.  Here are some basic tips for a wonderful foot massage.  At the Pittsburgh Center for Complementary Health and Healing, we start all of our reflexology sessions with a warm foot soak with dead sea salts and peppermint oil.  Following this foot bath, I also massage the feet with our peppermint and lavender sugar scrub.  It's a nice way to begin the massage sessions. 
For the massage, the feet can use a small amount of massage lotion or oil.  Start by making a comfortable setting for your friend.  Keep your friend's knees slightly raised by placing a cushion or pillow underneath them.  This takes the tension out of the knees. 
To warm up the feet, apply pressure with your thumbs and heels of your hands and make circular strokes towards the sides of the foot. Work up from the base of the toes and over the instep, and toward the ankle.  Do this several times and deepen the pressure each time, according to your friend's preference.  Do this until you find that your friends foot feels warm and relaxed. 
Relax the toes by taking your time and rotating each toe at the base joint.  This feels really good!  Clasp the base of each toe between your thumb and index finger.  Stretch up along the toe, and then slightly squeeze the tip before pulling off of the toe.
To ease tension in the arch of the foot, support the foot with your free hand .  Make tiny circles with the thumb tip along the arch, and work your way down to the heel.  Repeat and deepen pressure within your friend's pressure limit.
For massaging the heel, support the foot with one hand.  With the other hand, make circular strokes over and around the heel with your thumbs, fingertips and the heel of your hand.  Work both sides of the heel.
Using your knuckles for massage is another great technique.  Support the foot with one hand and clench your other hand and draw your knuckles slowly from the heel to the base of the toes.
Using your thumb in strips from the base of the heel to the base of the toes, aligning with each toe. 
Loosen the ankle joint. Support the ankle with one hand and using your other hand, turn the foot to the right, then to the left.  Next, rotate the foot several times in both directions. 
Be creative, have some fun, and you may find this activity to be a lot more refreshing and more enjoyable than just sitting around watching the television. I hope so at least.
