Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a vital bodywork therapy that can help facilitate the health of one's mind, body and spirit. Using “finger pressure” (hands, elbows, and knees too) of varying depth and tempo, as well as joint stretching, the giver works the energetic meridians of the receiver's body,  treating the current flow of Ki - (the Japanese term for life essence or vital energy). Receiving a Shiatsu treatment is both a relaxing and deeply restorative experience. Integrating all parts of the self into one harmonious and flexible being is the goal.

Zen Shiatsu

Although its name is relatively new, Shiatsu has roots that stretch deep into the past of Chinese medicine. At least 3000 years ago, people in China were manipulating energy or Qi to facilitate health and well being using acupressure, acupuncture, moxibustion and herbs. Chinese medicines and theory made their way to Japan in the 6th century A.D. Over time the Japanese blended this knowledge with their own expertise in bodywork, refining a system of touch therapy for the energy meridians. Western influence arrived at the beginning of the 1900's introducing anatomical and physiological correspondences to the work that had already evolved.

Zen Shiatsu was founded in the 1970's by Shizuto Masunaga. A truly cohesive “East meets West” model of health and disease, Masunaga was the first to create an entirely stand alone model of theory, diagnosis, and treatment for Shiatsu. The information he gathered and integrated were as follows:

• Research of the ancient Chinese medical texts
• His own training and years teaching at the Namikoshi Shiatsu school in Japan
• Clinical data gathered from the thousands of Shiatsu treatments he gave
• Western anatomy and physiology
• Modern Psychology
• Philosophy of Zen Buddhism

Shiatsu Treatments

Shiatsu treatments are given to treat any and all ailments as well as for the purpose of higher spiritual alignment. The belief in Eastern medicine is that healing potential for any disease or malady lies within the person themselves and can be facilitated or activated by an outside force, in this case the giver of a Shiatsu treatment. The Universe is seen as composed entirely of energy or Ki, which modern quantum physics has jointly concluded. Ki animates all the levels of being that we humans experience as separate, namely: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of being. Treatment of the meridians, or energy pathways, is one way to gain access to the entire system. Symptoms are seen as signs and information rather than villains, and often times lead the Shiatsu practitioner deeper to where the root of imbalance began. Raising communication and awareness within a client's energetic system opens the doorway to light and health.

At PCCHH clients should dress comfortably for treatments, as they will remain clothed during the session. Zen Shiatsu takes place on a cozy mat on the floor.
