I am a talker. I have friends that live long distance and I do not have a face book page or text messaging. I find myself on the phone more often than I want to be. My family is quite over the top with phone calls to one another as well. Even if these conversations are quick questions or small stories about the day, it can get old having a cell phone on your ear all day. It gets tiring knowing that you can be present and available at any time to even the best people in your life. There are days where I make it possible to turn off my phone and "just be" like the good old days. I think it is rejuvenating and sometimes necessary for me to really find some down time. I like to do this when I am at home with my family. My daughter, Kendra, and my partner, Matt get to have my total attention. I find myself relieved that there is no possible way for interruption and I relax more with play time or talking or watching a movie.
If you feel this is an impossible stress-buster for you to accomplish, follow a couple of steps that I find myself doing before I shut off the phone...
1. I call work or family memebers (in case of emergency or a work-schedule change) and give an alternate phone number.
2. My voicemail message explains that "I am taking time away from the phone, and I will get back to you within the next couple of days."
*That is not so tough. Give yourself, your friends, or your family the time and focus that they deserve. You will thank yourself.
