Yoga therapy is a body/mind therapy that can complement your existing massage or bodywork sessions. Through yoga therapy, you can acquire the tools you need to maintain the benefits of bodywork and integrate healthy patterns into your life on a daily basis.
Sessions are one hour long, and no prior knowledge or experience of yoga is necessary. Yoga therapy can serve as a great introduction to yoga if you are a beginner, or as a way to go deeper into your practice if you are a seasoned yogi. In these sessions, you will receive one-on-one, individualized attention tailored to your body, your needs, and your life. This is perfect for students who don’t want to take group classes, or who desire targeted, individual assessment of their body and movement patterns.
Yoga therapy is very soothing and relaxing, as you are placed in simple yoga postures tailored specifically for your body, assisted with the use of props such as blankets, bolsters, and blocks. This is a self-nurturing and self-reflective practice, in which you are encouraged to relax deeply and to integrate your breath with your body.
In our sessions, I assess and read the body, looking for a clear flow-through of energy from the center of the body to the periphery. I work from a whole-body perspective by considering all of the body systems: skeletal, muscular, ligaments, organs, endocrine, nervous, fluids, and the senses. We will work together to bring balance and to find new levels of support and proprioceptive awareness.
Once you become aware of areas of tension or holding in the body, the yoga poses target these areas specifically. First, attention and awareness is brought to the area; next, we start to unwind the area through the use of yoga and breath. We then reintegrate this newfound information into the whole body, making yoga therapy a whole-person, integrated mind/body experience.
