Thousands of years ago many cultures identified correlations between the phases observed in nature and the human experience. In China, Five Element Theory was developed as a methodology to deepen this understanding and enhance personal harmony within the natural world. Yin (cool, receptive, lower) and Yang (warm, active, upper) characterize life with its ongoing cycles of contraction and expansion. Yin and Yang represent a dichotomy of constant change and relationship and that are further broken down into Five Elements which constitute all things.
Each Element is associated with characteristics on both a macrocosmic and microsomic level.
Earth exists as the present moment and a transition between meteorological seasons. It is also connected with Late Summer, the two or three weeks before Autumn sets in, when the temperature is comfortable and nutritional needs are satisfied by the harvest. Within all transitions, Earth embodies balance, comfort and unconditional support. It is present moment awareness between each thought and each phase of life’s journey.
Earth transforms worry and insecurity into empathy and satisfaction through support in the present moment. We are always supported. Cultivate awareness of this support by pausing with your feet firmly planted in the Earth. As you press down feel the Earth lovingly press up into the bottoms of your feet. Smile into the bottoms of your feet and feel the Earth smile back.
Metal is characterized by the season of Autumn and the drawing inward of energy. It is a cooling phase and one of letting go. Metal is the liberation of the seed that found its creation through the growth, maturation, pollination and decay of the flower. Within ourselves Metal reflects the dream time and sensitivity to all emotions. When Metal has been refined and polished we can see ourselves with courage and honesty.
Metal transforms disappointment and grief into courage and acceptance. Take a slow, deep breath and a long, relaxed exhale to release accumulated tension. Accept yourself as you are and let go of that which no longer serves you. Know that the sweetness of life comes from its impermanence.
Water is where life begins; think primordial soup. It contains our DNA, embodies the potential within us and the resonance of our ancestry. Winter is the season of Water and extreme Yin at its peak, the Winter Solstice, a time for rest that allows creativity to germinate. We can feel frozen or find ourselves in a state of flow.
Water transforms fear and doubt into wisdom and trust. Nurture Water through resting, scheduling less activity during the Winter months and taking an afternoon nap any time of year whenever you feel sluggish. To embody our potential we must allow ourselves time to recharge and rejuvenate.
Wood is a warming phase, the rising Yang energy of Spring, brimming with the opportunity for growth. Wood is intelligent, humble and clear-minded. In Western culture, Wood energy and an emphasis on doing and future thinking is highly valued. The Wood Phase is rational and analytical, but can lend itself to frustration when life does not go as planned.
Wood transforms anger and frustration into insight and patience. Take a break from your work to enjoy a leisurely stroll, play a game or sit quietly under a tree. Relax into alternatives when things aren't going as planned. After all, we do not know our future.
Fire offers warmth, light and a sense of purpose. The season of Summer embodies Fire and extreme Yang energy at its peak, the Summer Solstice. It is maturation, fruits, flowers and activity. When it is strong and contained, Fire exhibits the power of meaningful communication, connection and integrity.
Fire transforms confusion and vulnerability into joy and purpose. Enjoying life is good for the heart and laughter has been found to improve circulation, enhance immune function and lower blood pressure. Think of something that makes you smile and allow that smile to sink into your heart, filling you with love, kindness, compassion and peace.
Life is characterized by constant change. Five Element Theory offers a relatable methodology that can assist in our personal study and growth. Each Element is of equal importance and they are not limited to the seasons. We cycle through the Elements each day and through varying phases of our lives.
Through the observation of nature and acceptance of ourselves we can embrace the wisdom of our
ancestors and enhance harmony with the natural world one small intentional action at a time.
