The practice of Shiatsu is informed, in part, by the Five Element theory.  This theory sees the Universe as constituted by five distinguishable phases or qualities of energy or Ki.  The Elements are: Metal, Earth, Fire, Water, and Wood.  Each season of the year is governed by a different quality of energy.  The season of Fall, which we have recently entered, is governed by the Metal Element.

Attributes of the Metal Element manifest in visible ways in nature as well as within ourselves.  In Autumn, trees are dropping their leaves and turning the energy inward and downward to the ground roots, preparing for winters cold.  This is also the movement of Metal phase Ki within our bodies.  We draw fresh Ki in from the universe through our lungs with each deep breath and the energy is sent downward into the body to be dispersed.  We release what is no longer needed through our Large Intestine, we let go.  We must make room and let go if we are to take in fresh new energy.  The emotion associated with Mental Element is grief.  Grief is connected to letting go and accepting change.  Summer has ended and we must prepare for Winter.  The Metal Element highlights the borders of our being; that which we take in and let go of define who we are and who we are becoming.  This is a continual declaration of being which spans a lifetime, from our first breath to our last.

A balanced Metal state is one characterized by healthy exchange both within ourselves as well as with our environment.  Feeling comfortable in our skin, and having a true sense of self-worth capture the value of the Metal energy.  Our ability to transform our identity and yet remain ourselves mimics the quality of Metal to be forged and shaped by fire and become solid once more.  Having a healthy set of lungs, good connection to our breath, as well as healthy bowels that eliminate waste with regularity, are all characteristics of balanced Metal energy.  As is healthy grieving, being with loss and sadness and creating space for new intake and potential.

Each of the Five Elements are recognized and worked during a Shiatsu treatment.  Shiatsu practitioner works the meridians of the body each of which is governed by a particular Element.  Certain  Elements and meridians will be highlighted during a treatment depending on a client's symptoms and diagnosis.
